So Canada Might Lose VPNs and Digital Privacy

So it seems Canada is trying to curb people's free speech...again

So it seems Canada is trying to curb people's free speech, put backdoors into networks, and has morons like Sameer Zuberi an idiot who had the nerve to say during Parliament that

"I plead to META to please curate an environment online that is...family friendly"

Sorry Zuberi... no, actually: Sameer. You don't deserve the respect of me calling you by your last name. I am someone who believes that if backdoors are put into systems they will be abused, no matter what you attempt or what your best intentions are.

Who thought this was a smart idea?

A great statement for the hearing came from Michael Geist [Research Chair in Internet and E-Commerce Law at the University of Ottawa], who gave a five-minute statement to Parliament on May 7, 2026.

This personally reminds me how all it takes is a single backdoor being added to a system to break everything.

Canada has already lost most of its major tech over the last 40 years from Ad Lib, ATI Technologies, VoodooPC, Softimage, and even Research In Motion, all former giants now reduced to shells of themselves.

Now we're risking another major purge. Shopify [10% to 27% of global e-commerce] and Tailscale, two Canadian companies, have said they will have to leave if this law passes, along with Apple, who already fought the FBI when they tried to force a backdoor in, and we all know how poorly that went.

Thankfully, dear readers, you are not alone. You should all reach out to your members of Parliament if you are in Canada and speak out against this. I have already been raising the alarm bells for months, but they're finally bringing in outside opinions to try and make some sense of this.

You know it's bad when even the US Electronic Frontier Foundation a nonprofit defending digital privacy and free speech is having to write articles about it, when they normally ignore what happens north of their border.

The EFF's article is entitled "Canada's Bill C-22 Is a Repackaged Version of Last Year's Surveillance Nightmare" and, say what you will about recent work from the EFF, at least they're actually doing something rather than pussyfooting around like so many other people.

But what do I know? I'm bonkers.

Welcome to The Null State. This site was something I was sitting on for a while and decided to reactivate as a hub for philosophy and governance-related writing. Most people can find me on my main blog LOKZ.NET or via my many spots on the Fediverse.

You can even see if I am on Second Life by looking at the icon on the right side of your screen.

Currently setting up a new version of my SL office.

I hope you enjoy your stay, but what do I know? I'm bonkers.
